The days leading up to Easter Sunday are the holiest days of the Christian year. The Paschal Triduum marks the three days on which we remember the passion and death of Jesus and the gift of the Eucharist. The Jews of Jesus’s time marked their days from sunset to sunset, so the three days of the Triduum are Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil, which leads into Easter Day, and we celebrate a single continuing liturgy that lasts those three days.
On Holy Thursday, we will celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, beginning at 7:30 pm. This mass celebrates the institution of the Eucharist and marks the end of Lent. We will welcome back the Gloria, which we have not heard during Lent, with our tower chimes and altar bells (you are welcome to bring bells from home to help with this!). This mass will also include washing of feet and the Renewal of Priestly Promises. This year, all are welcome to participate in the washing of feet—have your feet washed and then wash the feet of the next person. In this way, we all share in the humility of Jesus, who washed the feet of the Apostles. Following the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, we will form a procession to transfer the Blessed Sacrament to the Lady Chapel for adoration. The church will be open late if you would like to participate in the adoration.
The Celebration of the Lord's Passion (7:30 pm) picks up where the Mass of the Lord’s Supper left off, with the presiders coming from the front pews of the church in silence. Although there is no mass on Good Friday, you are welcome to participate in the rite and receive the Eucharist that was consecrated on Holy Thursday. After the Good Friday rite you may stay to venerate the cross.
Our Easter Vigil observance begins at 7:30 pm outside the church, where we light the new fire to celebrate the Resurrection and light our new paschal candle. We will sing the Exultet, the church’s great prayer of praise to God, and pass the light of Christ to each other. At this mass we will also welcome our elect and candidates into full communion with the Church. You are welcome to join us after mass in the Rectory for a reception honoring our new Catholics and their families.
Our Easter Sunday masses will be on the regular mass schedule (except no 6:00 pm). Please join us to celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord, the basis of our faith. We hope to see you at any or all of the Triduum liturgies!
