EVOLVE Adult Education Ministry presents Art Historian Jeff Mishur
"European Art in the Age of Shakespeare" - Two thousand sixteen marked the 400 years since the death of Shakespeare (1564-1616.) Jeff will focus on a selection of art created during Shakespeare's lifetime which represents one of the most exciting periods in the history of art, a period when accepted Renaissance practices gave way to radical Baroque innovations. This was also a period when the Church, still a major sponsor of artistic efforts, promoted the use of Counterreformation themes in order to catechize to people who were illiterate and offer a response to the challenges of the Protestant Reformation movements occurring in Europe. During this time, there was a central connection between art and the changing religious climate. Artists to be discussed include Caravaggio, Frans Hals, Rubens and Tintoretto.
